That's very interesting although I find the concept of props on a yoga practice unappealing.
"It is extremely beneficial in helping you deepen your pose, learn how to do it correctly"
You mean you actually have to do a pose correctly right from the start even if it take props ? Or you can do it "wrong" and still benefit from it ?
In Swásthya the rules are simple:
1) Respect the body
2) Permanence and conscience - using breathing (exhale phase) to progress a bit further on the pose
This means that at the beginning people will start a pose awkwardly but as long the general posture/alignment is maintained it is alright, and then as you make your progress class after class you will notice the correct posture is more and more available to you.
After a year of yoga doing it halfway wrong I suddenly realized that "wow, hey, I can DO IT" on a particular pose, not to mention the other general benefits.
Of course, depending on the posture and person you have varied levels of "correctness" but all will get there with time.
This reasoning makes sense to me; its a typical case of theory vs. practice, knowing about it vs. knowing - you know the end result of something but if go ahead and force your way into the finish line you might miss the finer detail because you never got around the middle experience.
In this case using ropes seems unnatural, probably props help you "get there faster" but I don't necessary agree that's the purpose of Yoga - its seems dogmatic to demand from a person that level of excellence.
It probably can take more time but you do feel some kind of epiphany when your knee is naturally touching a part of your body that it would not some time ago. :]

Sivananda Yoga Tips
What Is Yoga
The word "yoga" means "union". Yoga is a form of exercise based on the belief that the body and breath are intimately connected with the mind. By controlling the breath and holding the body in steady poses or "asanas", yoga creates harmony.
Yoga practice consists of five key elements: proper breathing, proper exercise, proper relaxation, proper diet, and positive thinking and meditation. The exercises, or asanas, are designed to ease tense muscles, to tone up the internal organs, and to improve the flexibility of the body's joints and ligaments.
Tip # 2: Proper Exercise: Yoga Asanas
The aim of proper exercise is to improve suppleness and strength. Each posture is performed slowly in fluid movements. Violent movements are avoided as they produce a build-up of lactic acid, causing fatigue.
Proper Relaxation
The release of tension through relaxation is vital to keep the body healthy. Begin and end each session of yoga asanas with relaxation, and relax between postures. This allows the released energy to flow freely. Feb 9 Arun
Positive Thinking & Meditation
Meditation is a state of consciousness. When practicing meditation, you must first learn how to calm the mind, and focus your mental energy inwards. Meditation can help to relieve stress and replenish your energy. If it is practiced on a daily basis, you will also find it will enable you you to think more clearly and positively, and to be at peace with yourself. Feb 9 Arun
Proper Diet
The recommended diet for a student of yoga is a simple and wholesome vegetarian one, made up of natural foods that are easily digested. It keeps the body vital and healthy, and the mind calm and free from restless thoughts. Processed and tinned foods are to be avoided when possible. Feb 9 Arun
The Importance Of A Teacher
Whether you are learning yoga singly or in a group, it is always best to be supervised by a qualified teacher. A teacher will demonstrate how to ease your body gently into and out of the yoga postures and, most importantly, how to breathe correctly when holding a balance. He or she will ensure that you do not strain your limbs, and will help you to align your body in the asanas. Feb 9 Arun
What You Need
You do not need special equipment to practice yoga. Although you can buy foam yoga mats, a towel on a carpeted floor will do just as well. For practicing indoors, you will need an open space, clear of furniture. The room should be comfortably heated and free of disturbances. Feb 9 Arun
When & Where To Practice
Try to practice yoga everyday. At the same time, be gentle. Do not force yourself. A yoga session should be a joy. Set aside a time when you will not be disturbed and you will not have to rush. Morning practice helps loosen up stiff joints after sleep. Evening practice releases the tensions of the day. Whenever you practice yoga, avoid eating for at least two hours beforehand. Feb 9 Arun
Each Session: How Long?
For maximum benefit, you should set aside about 90 minutes. When you are busy, try a shorter session with fewer asanas. It is very important not to feel rushed, and to allow time for relaxation between poses. You can always perform the breathing exercises at a later stage.
A Level Subject Selection Advice: 2007
This thread is meant to be the definitive thread for all advice pertaining to any queries about A Level subject selection. Much better to keep all data organized rather than litter the whole forum. Looking forward to any questions posted... Mar 30 Omar II
And ppl, heres a very early general advice:
DO NOT TAKE THE ACCOUNTS, BUSINESS, ECO and MATH COMBO!!! Unless you have no other option.
It is boring, unworthy, overly easy, not well regarded, and an insult to your intellectual capabilities. It is much better if u mix up the combination with a subject like History/Sociology, or Physics. Mar 30 Muneeb
Hi! My combination of 'A' Level subjects is Law,Economics and English Literature and I plan to do LLB,in future. Is my subject combination fine? Mar 31 Moosa
Eco and English wid law its very gud
if u have any intrest in English L
well my Advice is do not take Maths and Chem at the same time Specially Maths if u didnt have the backgroud of Add maths Mar 31 Muneeb
Yup! I have never studied Add Maths in O Levels.I just studied Maths in O Levels and I got an A grade in it but I`m not much interested in Maths nor in science subjects such as chemistry, biology, etc. I`m more interested in social sciences and about English Literature,I must say that when I was going to start it,I was not very interested in it but once I started studying it,I found it extremely interesting and now I really love the subject. Mar 31 Anonymous
ACC ECO and Maths in a lvlz is the best combo! With varsality Mar 31 Haseeb
my advice.. no matter if u studied add maths or not in o levels
do take a level mathematics...it is lot easier than o levels and will pay u at some juncture in life. Mar 31 Mohsin Ali
yeah, i'd recommend math too, didnt take Add math O level, got an A at AS at a high percentile so its not VERY difficult, plus it helps build ur concepts for a few topics in physics Mar 31 Muneeb
but the thing is that I don`t really have to get into the field of mathematics or science subjects.I intend to do Law,LLB after my A-Levels so I am not really interested in Maths. Mar 31 Omar II
@ Muneeb
I would definitely recommend History with your combination.
It wouldnt be a bad idea to take Maths up to AS Level also.

What is modelling ?
Modelling is a huge industry - with as many "experts" as there are people to ask.
It is too big and merges into other areas, such as acting. The industry is like an iceberg, reveals only the tip to the general public. What we refer to as "modelling" has split into two industries. One part, the real industry, is not much changed. It is bigger - adding new markets like TV, Music, Video and Internet sites. In this part, if you have the looks, get the contacts and work hard, you can succeed at modelling. Part two is new, and ominous - this is an industry that earns the bulk of its money from preying on the dreams of those who would be models. Many people dream of modelling, they are attracted by the prospect of easy money or the glamorous lifestyle, Most of those who dream of modelling will not. - Modelling is unique in that...
No amount of "hard work" will overcome any potential.
No amount of "potential" can overcome any work...as in lazy
Should you become a model? (is modelling a right choice.?)
Despite the glamour and hype you have seen about the modelling profession, it's hard work. It's tedious. It's filled with rejection, ups and downs; it is a lifestyle, not an 8-5 job. Not all jobs pay well. Unless you are seriously committed about modelling, willing to work at it on your own time, live a healthy life style, etc., you will not succeed as a model. You have to understand that there are lots of other people who want to be models. They are doing everything they can to be successful. Are you willing to put the time and energy into competing with these people, 24 hrs a day? There are many realities that prevent people from becoming models. Most of us do not really have any idea what we look like. Your look defines your market. Mar 4 Anonymous

Do you have what it takes to be a model?
Are you tall and slender and unusually attractive enough that you are as good or better looking than most other models? Be really honest with yourself about this. Beside looks do you have the tenancy, patience, aptitude, interpersonal skills, communication skills, stamina, confidence, business skills, etc.? If you think you do, then go for it! Despite its drawbacks, modelling can be fun, exciting, and adventurous. Be sure to maintain realistic expectations however, the odds of becoming a highly successful or famous model are slim. Famous models: Recently we had Madhu Sapre, Mehr Jesia, and Milind Soman now it's Bipasha Basu, Lisa Ray, and John Abrahim there are not many at the top!
Measurements
The best measurements for modelling are 5'9" , 34b bust, 24 waist, 34 hips. If you are within one inch of these measurements you will be very versatile to model almost anything. High Fashion models are typically 5'7" to 6' tall and an extremely thin size 7 with 32-35" bust, 22-25" waist and 33-36" hips. They are not necessarily classically beautiful. PETITE measurements would be 5'5" to 5'8" tall and a size 5 to 7. The model MUST have a well-proportioned body. PLUS SIZE models are 5'7" to 5'11" tall and wear a size 12 to 14, have a well-toned and proportioned body with a thin face, good skin and beautiful hair. Always provide very accurate measurements to the agency and to customers. (Helps to save embarrassment if you get hired for a job and the clothes don't fit because you were not honest). For a man, heights should be 5'11" to 6'2" and you must fit in a 40-42" jacket. For men - there are also guidelines for certain areas of success. Mar 4 Anonymous

The Initial test for an aspiring Model
Send your photo and resume to reputable coordinators or it is always better to meet personally. Setup an appointment and you will find out very quickly if you have what it takes. They don't have to be professional pictures. A head shot, natural and clear. Also a full-length shot that somewhat reveals your figure, a clingy dress, swimsuit, figure flattering clothes or other tight fittings garments should be worn. Forget about baggy clothes! If they don't like the photo you won't get an appointment. If they like it you will be invited for an assessment. If you don't have what it takes they will tell you on the spot. (They want quality models). If rejected don't give up yet! Each coordinator/agency is different and has different expectations and requirements from their models. Always ask about any immediate physical changes (haircut, weight loss, skin treatment, dental work etc.) and work on it for the future. Some coordinators/established models offer good training (in the form of workshops/courses) for local fashion shows and print work. They should not ask for money up-front for classes or training. There are often local jobs you can do. At local events, you can usually meet contacts that will help you along. Many local or first jobs may not be in front of the camera jobs, but they are public contact and exposure. This can be a great way to gain confidence and experience.
How to get started? Mar 4 Anonymous

An agency or coordinator should represent models. The model must have a portfolio. The agency/coordinator provides you with work (That is their main purpose. It is safe to say that they work for you!) They make a commission on your fee (15 to 20%). Be warned about agencies/coordinators who ask for money up front! Also check to see if they are reputable and genuine. The agency/coordinator should provide you with a few photographers name. Choose the right photographer you want. Pay the photographer for the photo shoots not the agency/coordinator. The agency/coordinator provides you with safe working environment and looks after legalities of the paper work for the job. They provide their clients with "Professional" models. Keep copies of all-important papers, such as contracts etc. You may need these if you have a dispute with the agency/coordinator. It is wise to choose the agency/coordinator carefully to maintain a long business relation. Constantly changing them gives you a reputation of being flighty and unprofessional.
What is Portfolio?
It's a collection of your modelling pictures. How many pictures you need varies. You should only keep strong pictures. Models should aim for quality not quantity! Avoid using 2 pictures of the same shoot (same look) Black and White is the favorite of the industry. 9 by 12 inches are the standard size. Your agency will require you to buy an 11 by 14 inches for their book (portfolio). A basic but versatile portfolio should have a casual headshot, styled headshot, body shot (conservative swimsuit or lingerie), a fashion shot (sexy), action shot, an editorial shot and even a catalogue shot. As you gain experience replace the older pictures with newer one. Keep your best picture at the end to leave a lasting impression! Do not wear jewelry for those prints, it takes the attention away from you. The wrong choice of undergarments may show panty line or bra straps and will distract the viewer. Tailor your portfolio for your strengths and the type of modelling you are doing. Mar 4 Anonymous

Choosing a photographer
Avoid "portrait photographer" they often don't understand the need of the fashion industry. See the photographer's portfolio. Do you like it? Does it represent the style and format your looking for. There are photographers who specialize in models. Be concerned about photographers who seek to take nude pictures of you or claims to be working on a swimsuit calendar. Photographers should be professional and respectful and you should bring a friend along. Always be cheerful, you never know when you might get a free shoot or a free picture or an extra roll done at no extra cost! If you bring your own clothes to the shoot, always bring extra. If the photographer for example like your look and decides to do an extra roll you will be ready to benefit from it. Keep an open mind; photographer s loves to do editorial shots.
You have everything, what happens next?
Well modelling is like a business, you need to pay rent and advertise, that's the commission you pay the agency / coordinator for promoting you and finding work for you. Your investment is your portfolio. You have been sitting around the house for a few weeks now waiting for a call? You finally get one! It's a "go see". Your agency/coordinator called you, usually on a short notice you have to meet the client. You bring your portfolio; it's like a resume for a job. They look at you and your book. You give them a comp card (like a business card) so they can remember you when you leave. You later find out if you get the job or not. If you get the job, the agency charges the client, then keeps a commission and pays you. After the job is done you might get pictures from the session. That is the best thing to have in your portfolio (referred to as tear sheets). And then the cycle repeats itself. On the job show your great personality, this is what will get you repeat business! Also keep in touch with your agency/coordinator; visit them once in a while to show interest. Mar 4 Anonymous

Let us first know what all dog shows are about. The first condition of dog shows is that only pure bred dogs can participate in them. Your dog has to be registered with the Kennel Club of the country. For India the KCI is the main club and shows are organised by the clubs registered with KCI under the KCI Rules. For such shows only dogs registered with KCI are eligible for the show. In addition to KCI there are some other clubs too organising the shows. One has only to make ensure that he should with align with one of them only.
A dog show has two broad categories-one is the breed show and the other is the Obedience class (show). The breed show is like a beauty contest. Where dogs and bitches of different breeds participate. You must know that a pure bred dog has a defined breed standard. It is the objective of the breeder to produce progeny as close as possible to the standard. Such dogs are shown in the dog show and the participants and spectators learn a lot abt the breed. Therefore if possible one must visit a dog show and learn abt the breed he wants to keep. Apart fr beauty and good points of the breed u also learn the intricate details too, like Boxers look ferocious but they r the most frenly dogs etc. Each breed in the show is grouped into various classes as per the age and past show record of the entries. Dogs and bitches are paraded in separate classes. A dog winning a Challenge Certificate (CC) under 3 different judges in 3 diff shows becomes entitled for prefixing the title Champion with his name. Since each sex has several classes, judge selects by elimination and retains only the Ist prize winners for the final round of tht sex. Then out of all bitches he selects a best of breed and again out of all dogs a best opp sex or vice versa. Then on tht day as per the performance if the judge feels this dog or bitch is worth it he awards a CC too. More intricacies in next post. watch out.

If u intend to be a showman, u must know that dog show is nothing but a sport. Thus dont grumble if u lose. Learn to be a sportsman. Dog shows in India earlier were an occasion to socialise, meet frens and their dogs and talk endlessley abt dogs. Many times the clubs used to arrange accomodation for outstation exhibitors and people used to talk all night abt their wins and losses and of course the dogs. But those days a dog was a pet and not a source of earning or a something to show off. Anyway bygones are bygones. If u want to be showman, first know the standards of the breed u are going to show. Then observe whether ur dog has all the points or not. Ask ur frens to do so, bec it is very difficult to find faults with ones own baby. Learn the language of the standards. For tht u must know the doggy terminology very well-know its morphology. U must know wat is a muzzle and wat a square muzzle means. U must know wat is an otter tail and wat does it look like. If u have a cocker spaniel (english) then u must know wat is meant by a Merry Cocker gait. U must know wat it means when the standard says a well angulated dog, wat are the hocks and set on of the tail, wat are flews and wat is a cat eye. Etc etc the terms are endless. Once u have learnt and understood the breed standard and satisfied urself tht ur dog is worth a trial, start training him for the show. As i said in the very beginning tht there r the breed and the obedience shows. Right now we r still talking of the breed shows only. The obedience show will be a separate chapter. Most dog owners presume tht a breed show means tht u go and stand in the ring with a well groomed dog and self and just let the judge do the rest of the things. It is not so. I will tackle tht in some detail. Grooming for the show itself is a big job for breeds like cocker spaniel, where hair need to be trimmed,or the poodles or the Afghan Hounds and Lhasa Apsos where 'Hair care' counts. We will know how to train ur dog for the show next time. A feed back fr readers is welcome
Training for the show - dog domain myspace.com
Now having decided tht u r going to show ur dog, the preparation has to start quite early in the life of the dog. Many times people have a 'healthy' dog, that may not confirm to the standard, but on the advice of frens and at times even the Vet they enter their dog on the spur of a moment in a show. Poor dog and the poor owner are at a loss inside the ring. The bewildered owner either loses his kool or makes the judge fume with his antics. And naturally his dog loses and the owner cribs abt partiality in the show. I have at times seen owners kick their dog once they lose. All this is a shame and shud never be done. So in order to understand the intricacy lets know wat the judge will ask u to make ur dog do! If u have a toy breed and even some small to medium sized breeds, the judge will ask u to place ur dog on a table. He will ask u to 'stack' ur dog. Meaning u make the dog stand on all fours in his natural stance. then the judge wud like to feel his bones right from shoulder blade to pelvis and also his fore and hind legs. Thereafter he wud like to see the mouth. Meaning thereby he wud like to see the 'bite' or simply how his upper and lower teeth look with jaws closed. Same procedure he wud follow for a large breed on but on the ground only. Thereafter he will ask u to either go 'up and down' the ring tht is start walking off with the dog in front of the judge in an imaginary straight line and come back along the same so tht he can see the action of the fore and hind limbs. Alternatively he may ask you to make a triangle. Always keep the dog on ur left and never come between the judge and the dog-he is interested in seeing only ur dog and not ur charms. He gets barely a min or 2 to make up his mind. For a large breed he will make u run and run and run around the ring to observe the gait more minutely. Mind u all the while the judge wud be mentally noting each and every detail of ur dog. U may be asked to wait on one side. At tht time dont start gossiping with frens outside and dont lose nerve either.

10 Essential Health Tips
(The Basics to Practice Every Day)
"He who has health has hope, and he who has hope has everything."
1. Move More
Make it a daily challenge to find ways to move your body. Climb stairs if given a choice between that and escalators or elevators. Walk your dog; chase your kids; toss balls with friends, mow the lawn. Anything that moves your limbs is not only a fitness tool, it's a stress buster. Think 'move' in small increments of time. It doesn't have to be an hour in the gym or a 45-minute aerobic dance class or tai chi or kickboxing. But that's great when you're up to it. Meanwhile, move more. Thought for the day: Cha, Cha, Cha…. Then do it!
2. Cut Fat
Avoid the obvious such as fried foods, burgers and other fatty meats (i.e. pork, bacon, ham, salami, ribs and sausage). Dairy products such as cheese, cottage cheese, milk and cream should be eaten in low fat versions. Nuts and sandwich meats, mayonnaise, margarine, butter and sauces should be eaten in limited amounts. Most are available in lower fat versions such as substitute butter, fat free cheeses and mayonnaise. Thought for the day: Lean, mean, fat-burning machine…. Then be one!
3. Quit Smoking
The jury is definitely in on this verdict. Ever since 1960 when the Surgeon General announced that smoking was harmful to your health, Americans have been reducing their use of tobacco products that kill. Just recently, we've seen a surge in smoking in adolescents and teens. Could it be the Hollywood influence? It seems the stars in every movie of late smoke cigarettes. Beware. Warn your children of the false romance or 'tough guy' stance of Hollywood smokers. Thought for the day: Give up just one cigarette…. the next one. Jun 14 Its me to take..

4. Reduce Stress
Easier said than done, stress busters come in many forms. Some techniques recommended by experts are to think positive thoughts. Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like. (i.e.,Soak in a hot tub; walk on the beach or in a park; read a good book; visit a friend; play with your dog; listen to soothing music; watch a funny movie. Get a massage, a facial or a haircut. Meditate. Count to ten before losing your temper or getting aggravated. Avoid difficult people when possible. Thought for the day: When seeing red, think pink clouds….then float on them.
5. Protect Yourself from Pollution
If you can't live in a smog-free environment, at least avoid smoke-filled rooms, high traffic areas, breathing in highway fumes and exercising near busy thoroughfares. Exercise outside when the smog rating is low. Exercise indoors in air conditioning when air quality is good. Plant lots of shrubbery in your yard. It's a good pollution and dirt from the street deterrent. Thought for the day: 'Smoke gets in your eyes'…and your mouth, and your nose and your lungs as do pollutants….hum the tune daily.
6. Wear Your Seat Belt
Statistics show that seat belts add to longevity and help alleviate potential injuries in car crashes. Thought for the day: Buckle down and buckle up.
7. Floss Your Teeth
Recent studies make a direct connection between longevity and teeth flossing. Nobody knows exactly why. Perhaps it's because people who floss tend to be more health conscious than people who don't? Thought for the day: Floss and be your body's boss.
8. Avoid Excessive Drinking
While recent studies show a glass of wine or one drink a day (two for men) can help protect against heart disease, more than that can cause other health problems such as liver and kidney disease and cancer. Thought for the day: A jug of wine should last a long time. Jun 14 Its me to take..
10 Essential Health Tips
9. Keep a Positive Mental Outlook
There's a definitive connection between living well and healthfully and having a cheerful outlook on life. Thought for the day: You can't be unhappy when you're smiling or singing.
10. Choose Your Parents Well
The link between genetics and health is a powerful one. But just because one or both of your parents died young in ill health doesn't mean you cannot counteract the genetic pool handed you. Thought for the day: Follow these basic tips for healthy living and you can better control your own destiny.
