I really don't know if power yoga,artistic yoga should be cosidered as branches of yoga at all. Traditionally,Patanjali never ever dealt with hatha yogic practices which were written about only around the 11th or 12 th century a.d.Patanjali did write about ashtang yoga abut the way the Ashtang yoga is being taught today, it is a misnomer. True yoga conserves energy and works on your systems. It does not consume your energy. In fact it is not an excercise in that sense. It is a totalistic system, a life style and not just a few hours of physical stretching
It is very true that yoga is not exercise as it is practiced in the west and one should sincerely practice the ashtang yoga right from Yama and niyama and not just jump to asanas straight. People want quick results thats why they like to convince them selves that asanas alone will bring about change in them but as per the sutra it should be followed one after the other in sequence and takes years togather of sincere practice to get to the right path as my guru has. He is 84 and is on his way to reverse his age and practices yoga and satvik diet sincerely and I have seen his fitness, he can run 100meter in 15 seconds at his age and also has got gold medal in his category in National games. Thats what I call real fitness and yogic benefit.
I agree Power Yoga is like twisted form of yoga I just don't get it, I've seen people doing yoga with dumbells. Other forms of yoga I see popular here in US are Vinyasa Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Flow yoga etc sorry don't have much details about what they teach in these styles.
