By its action on plants and animals, it creates oxygen and carbon dioxide. It also regulates temperature and humidity. Without the sun, our planet would be cold and lifeless.
The positive effects of sunlight -Sunlight provides the body with the means to produce Vitamin D (Vit D helps the body in various biological functions)Sunlight Helps Prevent Infections,Enhances the Immune System,Sunlight lifts the spirits ie,Tends to decrease depression and make you feel more relaxed.

How use of technology can avoid blasts
After the blasts, One thing comes to my mind, can we use technology to avoid bomb blast in high density public places like trains, busses, temples, bus stands etc.

The first thing that comes to my mind is use of frequency jammers so that remote controlled explosives will be neutralised. This will also mean that Mobile Phones will not work in those areas.

Metal Detectors, Automated entry machines which give entry only on producing the right tickets or passes will also help.

Please post your ideas.

I watch the news and DVD's on my PC

...but this does not 'count' as watching TV IMHO.

I haven't owned a TV since I left home at the age of 17. Lived happily ever after even though I love to watch telly from time to time. I just don't want the constant brainwash (you should buy this/look like that/etc. etc.) in my house and life...

I do get funny reactions from people when I tell them I don't have a TV. All the time, really. They're just shocked that such a thing is possible. They wonder how I can live without one. They even ask me how I get through my evenings!

Another reason not to watch TV is that, like Jesse, it usually leaves me totally drained and overstimulated. A couple of weeks ago I was in a hotel in Paris, watched a programme on mythological beasts in films and dreamt about werewolves, cats, vampires, etc. all night long. Not nice.

Oh and Jesse, I think you must be extremely rare in growing up without a TV - and very lucky. Interesting material for sociologists and the like too. I reckon it would be pretty interesting to compare self-image, outlook, etc. of kids who grew up without a TV with those who didn't.

What is the definition of development
What is the definition of technology

A very modern definition of development and developed countries/societies has presented by anthropologists as a satisfied society. As long as people are happy and enjoy their lives they are developed, if they are not happy they are not developed. A group of people living in the heart of some jungle who may not even wear cloths or live in mud brick houses are developed if they generally they are happy with the life style they have. People who may drive fancy cars and use fancy cellphones or lap tops are not developed if their quality of life is low and on average do not have a sense of satisfaction with their lives (as a group).

and about technology. Technology is not just computers and cars. A qanat is a technology (connected chain wells in the plains).

I did not try answer your question here, but I just wanted people to take these things in account when discussing this subject.

Development and technology

you are becoming a computer engineer and yet you have much to learn, my friend technology is a product of development and vice versa, so you cannot have one thing without having another Technology is something evil!!!! Be awere my friends!!!!
Just kiding. Technology is important but not so much. The concept of development is often mistaken with economic growth. In order to have economic growth you do need technology. Like India and China, who are growing very fast. But development is something more complex, because it envolves many aspects. Like health, education, culture, wellbeing, equality...

I hope I've made my point.

New Device Vacuums Away Carbon Dioxide

New Device Vacuums Away Carbon Dioxide

A new device placed in say, Iceland, could suck up atmospheric carbon dioxide emitted from vehicles as far away as Tokyo, making it a potentially useful tool in battling ever-rising levels of this greenhouse gas.

Carbon dioxide molecules trap heat emanating from the Earth’s surface and send it back downward, warming up the atmosphere. Scientists think that steadily rising levels of this and other greenhouse gases will bring about potentially disastrous changes in Earth’s climate.

Scientists have proposed many possible ways to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air: emissions could be reduced by using alternative energy sources, such as solar and wind power or alternative fuels, like ethanol or natural gas; and scrubbers could be placed on power plants to remove carbon dioxide and other gases from their exhaust.

But unlike these solutions, which reduce emissions, the new device captures carbon dioxide molecules that are already in the air and releases them as a pure carbon dioxide stream. This stream can be sequestered or used to enhance oil recovery.

“We are trapping carbon dioxide about 1,000 times faster than a tree does,” said study leader Klaus Lackner of Columbia University.

The device has an opening that pulls air in and the carbon dioxide in the air sticks to absorbent compounds (or sorbents) inside the device.

“Once you have the CO2 attached to the sorbent, you have to pry it loose again,” which is the costly part of the procedure, Lackner said.

The scientists who created the device point out one particular advantage: It could be placed wherever sequestered carbon dioxide would be stored, instead of where emissions occur. By contrast, scrubbers are impractical to use on cars, which contribute 20 percent of the global carbon dioxide emissions, and it is difficult to retrofit power plants with the scrubbers.

The device has been tested in Arizona, and with some improvements, Lackner estimates that commercial versions could be ready to use in a few years. He envisions the technology being used to first compensate for emissions, then being used to drive carbon dioxide levels down, and finally combing the extracted carbon dioxide with hydrogen to make a liquid hydrocarbon fuel that is not a fossil fuel, though he says this advance is a good 50 years away.
